Nationwide Appraisal Compliance Specialty
Nicholas D. Pilz, MAI, SRA, AI-RRS serves as our appraisal compliance expert. He provides nationwide compliance consulting and expert witness services. Since 2001, he has specialized as a real estate appraiser in various property types. His appraisal and appraisal review experience draws from multiple perspectives. He specializes in appraisal compliance, such as review of large Mortgage-Backed Securities nationwide. As a project manager, he managed significant nationwide projects for nearly a decade. He also worked at region and national levels for agencies such as the FDIC, Federal Home Loan Bank Board, the Department of Justice, and the IRS.
Nicholas has advanced from analyst to lead project manager, managing multi-million-dollar budgets and strict timelines. He developed specialized software for these projects and managed document administration for discovery. He provided expert testimony in Federal Tax Court on issues related to appraisal compliance.
Service to the Profession
He holds a general appraisal license in multiple states and has MAI, SRA, and AI-RRS designations from the Appraisal Institute. He served on the Appraisal Institute’s national board of directors from 2017 to 2020 and received the outstanding board service award in 2020.
Nicholas has held various committee positions and was vice-chair of the national education committee. For over a decade, he has focused on appraisal review topics in education for the Appraisal Institute. He has taught courses like Florida Appraisal Laws and Regulations, which he authored, since 2019.
Nicholas is also an AQB-certified USPAP instructor. USPAP sets the appraisal standards nationwide, mandated by law in many states. He was appointed to the Appraisal Standards Board in 2021, became vice-chair in 2022, and continues in this role as of 2024.
